Disaster Relief

E-mail Print PDF

The recent tornado that that inflicted so much damage to the city of Joplin Missouri touched another joplinletter community 1,400 miles away.

After reading the Joplin Kiwanis Club's weekly newsletter describing the losses to the members (business, property, and worst of all, loss of life), members of the Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs wanted to get involved. A member reached out to the Secretary of the Joplin Kiwanis Club, Larry Gruber, and asked how we could help. Gruber explained that the disaster had affected the school system hard. The town of 50,000 had lost over 270 classrooms. Along with those lost classrooms were many classroom enhancements that were purchased by the teachers from their own funds. Joplin Kiwanis wanted to replace those items to bring normalcy back to the classrooms and create a familiar environment for the students to learn in.

Our club was touched by this program and sent $500 to the Joplin Kiwanis Club to help them in their community rebuilding efforts.
